Sh276mn spent on revamping health facilities in Nyamira

Posted on : Monday, 15th August 2016

Over Sh276 million has been spent in revamping health facilities in Nyamira County.

Governor John Nyagarama says they have pumped at least Sh211 million towards the purchase of hospital equipment.

Germany, Finland and Global Fund added Sh65m worth of equipment said the Governor.

The money excludes funds the County has used so far to establish additional 13 new health centres.

The County has now 100 rural health facilities spread across the sub-counties.

The devolved unit has been allocating a quarter of its annual budgets to the Ministry of health but most of it goes to recurrent expenditure and construction of new health facilities.

In the Current financial year, the county allocated Sh1.8 billion to the ministry out of its Sh5.9 billion budget.

The Kenya Demographic and Health Survey recently showed that the County has the best health indicators in maternal and child health in Nyanza region.

Mr Nyagarama said his government spent Sh118m in 2015 /16 financial year to procure medical equipment for area hospitals with the aim of improving service delivery to patients.

These included Intensive Care unit, theatre, maternity and dental equipment, oxygen generating plant and laundry machines.

Governor Nyagarama said a dental unit will be established at Keroka Sub-county hospital while the one at Nyamira referral hospital will be upgraded during the current financial year.

This is an additional of Sh27m spent the previous year to procure critical medical equipment which included laboratory equipment and furniture for health facilities.

“My government also spent Sh66m to procure an assorted medical equipment that included 16 slice CT Scan, refrigerators for immunization services, infant incubators, phototherapy lights, autoclave machines, suction machines, microscopes and delivery beds,” he said.

He said resources for financing the County budgets have been limited and it has been impossible for his government to work alone to realize its development targets as per the devolved unit’s Integrated Development Plan.

“My government has been mobilizing resources from local and international development partners to bridge the gap and recently we got health facilities from Germany and Finland worth Sh50m,” Mr Nyagarama added.

He said the County also received equipment worth Sh15m from Global Fund through the Kenya Red Cross Society.
